You’ve probably seen Alyssa Coscarelli, better known as @alyssainthecity, roaming the streets of New York – or pictured doing so on your Instagram feed. The former Fashion Market Editor for Refinery29, who now has fully transitioned to a full-time freelance writer and consultant, has been a staple force on the fashion week circuit for many seasons now. It’s no surprise that her schedule for Day 1 of New York Fashion Week was jam-packed with some of the best shows – from Maryam Nassir Zadeh to Collina Strada. Here, the fashion influencer (and former CFDA intern) shares her thoughts from the front row on the collections from Day 1 of New York Fashion Week.

BLDWN Fall-Winter 2019

“These were the laid-back yet sophisticated staples I wish I owned more of. I tend to be a trend-chaser, but BLDWN approaches getting dressed with such a timelessness that I was taking notes for my own styling. It’s cool and effortless yet totally put-together at the same time. Magic!”

Maryam Nassir Zadeh Fall-Winter 2019

“Maryam Nassir Zadeh is always one of the NYFW shows I look forward to most. Her fresh approach to femininity, unique setting, and cool-girl styling always make it a highlight of the week. This collection didn’t disappoint, with a fun combination of easy suiting and pops of tie-dye.”

Collina Strada Fall-Winter 2019

“I really appreciated that Collina Strada incorporated a clear message about climate change and sustainability into its show. A spoken-word performance stressed the importance of preserving the only planet we have for future generations, and the models walked the runways with reusable water bottles and containers to encourage us to do the same. It even provided a list of ways to lessen our footprint. The whole show was meaningful and refreshing, and the clothes were still vibrant and full of life.”

Ulla Johnson Fall-Winter 2019

“Ulla Johnson truly did what she does best — elevated bohemia, voluminous sleeves and silhouettes, and the kinds of floral you want to wear. The front row was littered with celebrities and influencers who all feel beautiful in Ulla’s designs, and this latest collection will certainly be just as popular. A standout for me was a brown, puffy dress with an oversized yellow floral motif. I would wear that instantly if I could.”
