We’ve all been there. We’ve fallen in love with a runway look at a fashion show; sifted through a rack at Barneys and discovered the perfect piece, or saw a must-have-now look on someone else’s Instagram. And then, for whatever reason, we didn’t buy it. What follows is regret, a sense of loss, and then, ultimately, a mourning period that, for some, can last years.

For 10 of Joseph Altuzarra’s friends and muses, there is now a reason for jubilation. To mark his first decade in business, Altuzarra asked each to select memorable pieces from the archives they didn’t get their hands on at the time they were available, and he reissued these looks for a limited edition capsule called The One That Got Away.

There’s plenty of great fashion to choose from. I have been a fan of Altuzarra’s collections practically from day one, first meeting the designer when he was new to New York Fashion Week. He offered a fresh perspective on chic, and I remember running back to my office, then at WWD, raving about this young Paris-born, Swarthmore-educated talent. And the runway hits kept coming: from his memorable Edward Scissorhands collection to Berber and other folkloric touches, charming gingham, cool Mugler and Montana references, terrific outerwear, and sleek silhouettes fit for a Parisienne whose style is on the right side of bourgeois.

The anniversary capsule features 12 ready-to-wear and three accessories pieces that aptly establish Altuzarra’s fashion narrative through the eyes of women who embody his ethos (think sexy, confident, strong, powerful). That chic group has been led by Vanessa Traina and Carine Roitfeld and also features Evan Rachel Wood, Indya Moore, Shu Pei Qin, Melanie Huynh, Caroline Issa, Cindi Leive, Jenna Lyons, and Sarah Rutson.

“This has been such a special project for me,” Altuzarra said, “because it gave me the opportunity to look back at the last 10 years through the eyes of 10 of my closest friends and muses.”
