Thankfully, I love an adventure…Because that’s exactly what I got when I signed up to travel to Singapore in November with Michael Kors. The “fun” began well before I landed. Actually, it started at JFK Airport, when I was told at check in that I couldn’t board the flight because, in order to go to Singapore, you must have a passport that’s valid for at least six months. Mine was valid for a measly five. After a few moments of sheer panic, I managed to convince an airline supervisor to contact Singapore immigration, and I got the green light. Crisis averted.
Once I landed (some 20 hours later), I was greeted at the St. Regis Hotel by sweet Olivia Sinzer from Michael’s team and a hotel manager. After some room service (usually a club sandwich and fries) and a massage at the hotel’s amazing Remède Spa, I slept and slept to try to get over the jet lag.
Fast forward 24 hours and it’s the morning of my interview with Michael at the Singapore School of the Arts, the city’s leading design school. In the crowd were students and a fair amount of regional press. Michael is always a great interview because he’s honest, unfiltered and, let’s be honest, hilarious. My favorite story was the one he told about helping Jackie Onassis pull off a pair of boots in a dressing room when he was working as a salesperson at Lothar’s.
That night, Michael celebrated the opening of his new flagship store on Orchard Street, Singapore’s Madison Avenue. Kate Hudson flew in for the event, which included a beautiful dinner at Cut, Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant. Each guest had a fan as their place card, which was the perfect social media prop. Kate, ever the Instagram expert, showed Michael and me how to use Boomerang. Sad, but true.
After a meal of steak and potatoes, we were all exhausted from the packed day and headed back to the hotel.
The next morning — my final day in Singapore — I was free to do what I wanted, so I explored this great city and took in the local shops, culture, and food. That night, it was back to the airport and another 20-hour flight home to New York.
Quite the adventure!
