Alexis Bittar is stepping into a new role: film director. Renowned for his jewelry line and for constantly pushing the envelope, the CFDA member directed “Reclaim the Flag,” a 30-minute short film debuting July 17 on YouTube.
Produced by Academy Award-winner Bruce Cohen, the duo unpacks the meaning of the historic American flag with queer leaders—specifically within the context of the community under the current administration, which has sparked mixed feelings of fear and belonging for many.
Cohen and Bittar raise a vital question at the heart of their work: how do we reclaim the American flag to honor the rich diversity of the U.S. and those who call it home?
CFDA members Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mizrahi, media personality Jenna Lyons, artist Bill T. Jones, entertainment figures Lena Waithe, George Takei, King Princess, Jim Parsons and Symone the drag queen, as well as a vast array of over nearly 50 luminaries spanning age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity and profession join the conversation and unpack how the iconic American flag can be reclaimed as a symbol of unity for all Americans. These individuals share their personal stories about living in America, alongside their hopes for the future and that of the LGBTQ+ community.
“How do we come from a place of strength to reclaim the American flag? It’s this powerful question that inspired us to create an intimate space where we could explore these topics,” said director Bittar and producer Cohen. “We are thrilled and honored that such a distinguished group of LGBTQ+ thought leaders have joined us for this project. By showcasing the strength of each person’s individual story, we are examining what it means to be an American today.”
