NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

A Look at Highlights from NYFW: Men’s

February 8, 2019

The eighth season of men’s featured CFDA-produced shows for emerging and established talent at Pier 59 Studios. There were new additions, including Keenkee of New York/South Korea, Lukhanyo Mdingi of South Africa, and No Sesso of Los Angeles. Palomo Spain made a grand return, Todd Snyder closed out the first day with a spectacular show, and Tom Ford marked the end of men’s and the beginning of women’s.

BLDWN

Under new direction from president Johnathan Crocker and menswear design director, Joe Sadler, BLDWN continues to evolve as they debuted their first men’s collection outside of their traditional denim roots. The result was a highly functional collection with sharply tailored coats and fine-knit pieces that blended together nicely with their classic denim items.

Palomo Spain

After the 2017 debut, Palomo Spain returned to America this season. Alejandro Gómez presented an enchanting collection called ‘1961,’ inspired by the Sergei Diaghilev, Ballet Russes and the Spanish avant-garde movement. Modeled by Jacob Bixenman and Parker Kit Hill to an audience that included Steven Klein and Patti Wilson, the industry rallied behind the designer’s avant-garde and progressive designs.

No Sesso

History was made when Pierre Davis sent her collection down the runway: she r became the first trans-woman to show on the Official Calendar.  The collection was displayed on models of all shapes, sizes, and colors – including artists Steve Lacy and Kelsey Lu. The innovative collection was a step towards a more inclusive future.

Joseph Abboud

Joseph Abboud’s latest collection paid homage to his gradparents’ voyage to America through Ellis Island. The textural play on his sharp suiting gave a rich dimension to his Fall-Winter 2019 Collection.

NIHL

Designer Neil Grotzinger once again masterfully subverted masculinity with his collection of low-cut leotards and leather jumpsuits. He took inspiration from the seemingly mundane life of the Midwestern American video gamer, giving the uniform a queer makeover by pairing baggy cargo shorts with sleek cropped athletic tops. Also back this season were Grotzinger’s intricate lacework and bright embellishments, which the designer is quickly becoming recognizable for.

Todd Snyder

The venue was flooded with sharp gentlemen, including Johannes Huebl and Cody Simpson, eager to see what Todd Snyder had up his sleeve this season. His contemporary take on menswear staples, as well as plaids and fair isle, had us dreaming of next autumn.

Wan Hung

After working for designers like Tom Ford and Simone Rocha, it’s no wonder why Wan Hung’s first show during New York Fashion Week drew so much attention. A strong emphasis on outerwear and bold accessories put the designer on the map.

KEENKEE

For designer Kee Kim’s NYFW debut, he drew inspiration from the streets of the city. Observing the “dynamics of pedestrian movements” served as the inspiration behind billowy pants and cropped suits of the emerging talent.

N. Hoolywood

Daisuke Obana’s show was full of energy. The label returned to New York with a strong collection on street-cast models, the label’s signature. The utilitarian collection featured bright colors and bold prints, all constructed in an oversized silhouette.

Landlord

The Landlord look is a distinct one. Models that charged down the runway in Ryohei Kawanishi’s latest designs evoked a sense of school boy charm, but with a lot more edge. The designer reworked traditional school uniforms by pairing checkered outerwear and logo hoodies with chains, harnesses, and embellishments in a colorful collection.

Robert Geller

Titled “Mountain Climbing to the Moon,” Robert Geller’s collection was inspired by Tibetan mountain climbers and astronauts. Utilitarian garments in nylon colors embodied an adventurous nature, which was emphasized by the designer’s collaboration with outerwear giant lululemon.

Bode

Emily Adams Bode, fresh off her win as a runner-up in the 2018 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, presented her collection at an intimate presentation – or what was meant to be. The room was packed with the growing fan-base which has fallen for the designer’s vintage textiles and quilted garments. Inspired by the life of gallerist Todd Alden, the collection expanded upon her previous work and included a wide array of accessories – and a particularly attractive translucent jacket filled with pennies.

Tom Ford

It wouldn’t be the end of New York Fashion Week: Men’s without Tom Ford. Models were draped in loose silk shirts and furry toppers as they walked down the runway in his signature tailored looks.
