A Defining American Voice: Zac Posen and the Power of Creative Continuity

March 31, 2026

Aldo Araujo

Few designers have shaped the narrative of modern American fashion with the same clarity and conviction as Zac Posen. From his early rise as one of New York’s most promising talents to his evolution into a creative leader operating at global scale, the CFDA member has built a career defined by precision, imagination, and an enduring commitment to the artistry of dress.

Today, as EVP and Creative Director at Gap Inc. and Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy, Posen continues to expand his influence, bridging heritage and innovation while shaping how millions engage with fashion in their everyday lives. Across every chapter of his career, one constant remains: a dedication to quality, to craft, and to the evolving language of American style.

This year, that impact is recognized with his distinction as Designer of the Year at the American Image Awards, which celebrates its 50th anniversary. The milestone also marks ten years of partnership between the CFDA and the American Apparel and Footwear Association, with the CFDA serving as the gala’s beneficiary, symbolizing an enduring collaboration dedicated to supporting and amplifying American fashion talent.

As EVP and Creative Director at Gap Inc., and Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy, what does a typical day look like?
There isn’t one typical day, which is what I love about the job. My role ranges from reviewing campaigns to strategic planning and alignment, to technology evolution, supply chain, and overseeing our educational and creative programs.

My workday usually starts around 8:00 a.m. and ends around 6:30 p.m. but I’m always thinking well into the night, it’s a living dedication and collaboration. A Company is like a living entity. First and foremost, I’m always thinking about the product, customer experience, and the quality.

How are you thinking about culture today, and what communities are inspiring you most?
Today, culture is wide, vast, and global, even shaped by non-human entities. It’s a mix of layered references that form sub-, micro- and macro-cultures, all moving at an incredible pace.

These influences come from everywhere: individuals at home sharing their point of view, emerging voices, and established icons. From art and music to the streets around the world, an increasingly into the virtual space, culture is constantly self-creating.

Where are you drawing inspiration from today, and has that changed over time?
My inspiration is continuously evolving. I try to be a cultural sponge. The most important thing is to remain curious.

That curiosity can take you anywhere: into a book in a library or deep into online research, which has expanded the dialogue and made education and discovery accessible to a much broader audience.

In the age of AI, what does authenticity mean to you?
Authenticity, to me, is human touch and emotion.

What does “American fashion” mean to you today?
American fashion still represents self-creation, ingenuity, freedom of identity, innovation, and a refinement. It has always been pioneering in spirit.

It reflects the diversity of voices and creators across the landscape. And through the Gap Inc. brands, we are a platform for the classic, what people wear every day, the everyday wardrobe of the public: T-shirt and jeans. We helped bring casual fashion to the forefront, and we continue to represent that legacy.

How has the CFDA community shaped your career, and your role in it now?
The CFDA has been incredibly formative in my journey and career. I’m deeply proud to be an American designer and part of this community.

It’s been a joy to witness the evolution of over the past 20 years, seeing new generations of designers and creators emerge, and the CFDA’s commitment to highlighting, promoting, and nurturing creative talent.

Over time, I’ve come to appreciate even more the rarity and beauty of this community, and the opportunity to contribute back to it.

What’s one word or phrase that defines your outlook for 2026?
Integrity. Innovation. Quality.
