Fearless Fashion Females: Michelle Smith

March 13, 2017

Michelle Smith has always been strong-minded, and especially so since the start of her career. With a strong drive and determination, she became the first American Hermès employee to be transferred to the luxury house’s Paris base.  This determination continued to lead her to start her own brand, Milly.

What is one piece of advice that you would give someone  at the start of their career?

At the start of your career, you may not know exactly what you want to do. Early on, all work experience is helpful –even jobs you are not happy in. Everything you experience will help you realize your true path and your passion. Once you find your passion, pursue it with gusto!

Who is your most admired cultural heroine?

I have many! Gloria Steinem, Ruth Bader Ginsburg…but I think Rosa Parks is one of my most admired cultural heroines.  She was such a brave, noble woman who stood up against racial segregation in the deep South during a terribly dangerous, volatile period in our country’s history. She risked her life for equality. She was an excellent role model for all people, not just women. Her legacy lives on.

What moment, personal or professional, are you most proud of?

I am always thrilled when I see someone wearing Milly. It’s an emotional, full-circle moment. I remember the piece they are wearing from my initial sketch to prototype to the production garment shipping to stores – and then to imagine someone buying my little creation in a store. Knowing someone chose one of my pieces when they have so much to choose from always makes me smile and gives me goose bumps!

Women’s roles in society have changed dramatically over the past several decades. How have these changes had a personal impact on you?

I think I’ve had it relatively easy. So many women who came before me worked and struggled and fought so hard for the type of life I lead today. I am a mother, an entrepreneur–I feel in control of my destiny and I am living my dream.  But as of late, my rights and the rights of others, which I sadly took for granted, are threatened. I will speak up and stand up for what I believe is right. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

What future goals do you have for yourself?

I would like to help others through what I do and through what I create. I am really excited about this. I’ve realized so many personal dreams already. The next chapter of my life is about helping others.
