Vera Wang’s Golden Moment at the White House

March 22, 2023

According to the White House, the National Medal of Arts is awarded to those who have “advanced the arts in America and offered inspiration to others.” Cue Vera Wang, a true perfect embodiment of this ethos.

On Tuesday, Wang received the National Medal of Arts at the White House. The designer was one of 23 honorees, Mindy Kaling and Bruce Springsteen among them.

Wang, who sits on the CFDA Board, started her career at Vogue, becoming the magazine’s youngest ever fashion editor at the age of 23. She was a design director at Ralph Lauren before launching her own brand in 1990, revolutionizing the bridal category in the process.

President Biden hosted the honorees on Tuesday with First Lady Jill Biden in attendance.

On her Instagram, Wang said she was “incredibly moved, incredibly honored.”

“Words cannot express my feelings upon receiving this incredible honor today, and to be here at the White House with my two daughters, Cecilia and Josephine Becker,” Wang said.

She congratulated her fellow honorees and thanked the National Endowment for the Arts for the recognition.

She also thanked President Biden “for this special acknowledgment and recognition as a woman, mother, designer, entrepreneur, and Chinese American. Your continued and generous support for all the Arts ensures a future for all humankind to be able to express their most creative selves. Thank you for allowing me to be but a small part of the cultural history of this country.”

Congratulations, Vera!
