With a heavy heart we remember Franca Sozzani, the adored editor of Vogue Italia, who passed away Thursday morning in Milan after battling a long illness. She was 66-years-old.
“Franca was a true godmother of fashion and beauty. Her eye for talent, her enthusiasm, her fearlessness, and her warming smile will continue to live forever,” said CFDA Chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg.
Sozzani leaves behind an admirable legacy. At Vogue, she became a powerful champion of talent. Working closely with photographer Steven Meisel and stylists such as Patti Wilson, Sozzani is credited with discovering the careers of many top models. She also didn’t shy away from important industry issues. In 2008, she produced the memorable all-black issue of Vogue Italia that triggered a conversation on diversity in the fashion industry. Her long list of social accolades prove that as much as she was an industry icon, Sozzani was also an activist.
Most recently, she was the subject of the documentary Franca: Chaos and Creation made by her son Francesco Carrozzini
The CFDA offers it’s condolences to Sozzani’s family and friends. The legendary impact that Sozzani has had in fashion and in the world will always be remembered.
