On Tuesday evening, the CFDA held an intimate conversation for CFDA members and {Fashion Incubator} designers as part of our ongoing An Evening With series. Joining us was Image Architect Law Roach who shared the story of his career, inspirations, future dreams and how his work propelled him into celebrity stylist stardom. Here are some of Roach’s most memorable moments of the night.
On Success
“Success is a byproduct of doing what you love. The industry is my family so work is not a job. If you don’t do it for the money or the praise, success will fall in your lap.”
“It doesn’t matter if you’re on the best-dressed list or the worst-dressed list. It’s about starting a conversation. It’s about making an image that will last beyond your time.”
“Clothes are a privilege and it’s important to stay humble in this industry.”
“Be confident in your work – because it will empower your clients. There is a reason you’re in that room with them— they value your vision.”
“I love that people find me inspiring but at the end of the day, if we don’t inspire people and make them feel beautiful, then we are not doing our job.”
The Very First Client
“I always credit me becoming a stylist to my mother, she allowed me to play with Barbies as a child. No one was so liberal on the South Side of Chicago. Barbie was my first girl, she was my first client.”
Working with Clients
“Clients are receptive to wearing new designers. I try to educate them on who they are and where they came from.”
“There needs to be synergy between me and my client, it has to feel right for me. It needs to make sense and help each other.”
“DM, ask for my phone number. I love speaking to people. I love to hear your voice and passion. I thrive off human interaction.”
On Inspiration
“As a young kid, the only stylist I heard of was Rachel Zoe. Her lifestyle was so glamorous. I knew I wanted to have that life one day.
On Challenges
“You have to know why you do what you do. It is one of the hardest industries to be successful. I’m happy, but it’s sad because I don’t have many relationships because I’m so busy. Your circle becomes smaller because you become obsessed with your job. This industry becomes your life and your everything. Work excites me. That’s what drives me and makes me happy!”
His All-Time Favorite Moment
“Celine [Dion] at the 2017 Billboard awards. Her performing under that chandelier. At that moment I never dreamt that big of a dream. I had a part of the biggest, most beautiful moments of her career.”
