Sometimes all it takes is a trip back through your past to get inspired. Such was the case with Seoul-born designer Kee Kim of Keenkee, the New-York-based men’s label founded in 2018. For his Fall 2020 outing, Kim envisioned how he thought 2020 might look like as a teen in the late ’90s to early aughts. “2020 was the future when I was a teenager,” he said, “and this collection was initiated from future nostalgia, following artistic nuances and design elements that were mutated over time.”
As a result, there were plenty of turn-of-Y2K-isms with a retro-futuristic twist. It mostly came through in the fluorescent pixel digital prints, (Kim is known for his custom-developed prints and textiles), body-hugging knit turtlenecks rendered in gradient blends, slick PVC faux-python pants, and Kim’s favorite: a two-tone neon yellow hoodie with an asymmetrical construction.
Nearly all of the models sported wacky mouthpieces fashioned out of Motorola RAZR flip phones and other recycled obsolete cellular phones that came courtesy of Georgian artist Shalva Nikvashvili. (Fittingly, iPhone-wielding showgoers angled to get a pic of the accessory.) In the meantime, it will be interesting to see what the new decade brings for fresh design talent like Kim.
