There couldn’t have been a more perfect backdrop to Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show than the Met Museum’s Temple of Dendur (the Pyramids of Giza being the one exception perhaps). The setting – the Ancient Egyptian temple, completed during the reign of Augustus Caesar by 10 BC – is impressive on any given day of the year. On Tuesday evening, it gave context to Karl Lagerfeld’s beautiful collection, which riffed on Ancient Egypt with plenty of gold, some graffiti, and some serious star power in the crowd – Penelope Cruz, Christy Turlington, Diane Kruger, Margot Robbie, Julianne Moore, Lily-Rose Depp, Marion Cotillard – on the runway (but more on that later).

Chanel presents its Métiers d’Art collection in early December in a different city each year. Last year, the house took the show to Lagerfeld’s hometown Hamburg, and Rome, Salzburg, and Edinburgh were treated to the experience in prior years. This was the second time Chanel chose New York for the show, and it was a major moment for the city.
Métiers d’Art brings together the 26 artisanal maisons now owned by Chanel, including Lesage (embroidery and tweeds), Lemarié (feathers and flowers), Desrues (costume jewelry and buttons), Barrie (cashmere), Maison Michel (millinery), and Causse (gloves).
The collection was rich in color and texture, from Chanel tweed suits with gold touches to hieroglyphics-like patterns (some rendered in graffiti style), and even gold body paint on several models’ legs. Exquisite jewelry and jewel elements added to the collection’s Egytian vibe.
The gold theme extended to the most famous face on the runway, Pharrell. The Chanel friend and collaborator took his walk around the temple in a gold knit top teamed with gold metallic gold pants and boots.
Like much of the evening, this was a moment to remember.
