Designing pieces for dance requires a unique approach, which Brandon Blackwood mastered for his recent creations for contemporary dance company A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, whose mission it is “ to create a body of dance-based work that is galvanized by Black culture and history and features the rich tapestry of Black and Queer stories.”

Specifically, Blackwood designed the costumes for “Someday Soon,” a new A.I.M production by its former dancer and award-winning choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat.

“When creating, we pulled inspiration from natural elements which are represented in the colorways and fabrications of each costume,” Blackwood said. “Using fabrics such as hand-dyed ombre power mesh for tops to earth tone flowy nylon for pants, we wanted to enhance the fluidity and movement of the performance with synchronized yet effortless costumes that also celebrate the individuality of each performer.”

The 20-minute ensemble dance piece is centered on themes of gratitude and self-doubt. It premiered last month. A performance is planned at SUNY Purchase in April.

“I was elated to work with the Brandon Blackwood team,” Jinakunwiphat said. “I admire his work and the Brandon Blackwood Foundation and felt like this collaboration in this moment in time would be special.”
