Alexander Wang Fall-Winter 2019

Alexander Wang talked a lot about hustling in his press notes – as in “the hustle that so many of us have used to make our mark, to break free from stereotypes or societal handcuffs.

“To be American is to hustle,” he elaborated, “to grasp opportunity, to be fearless, to speak your mind, and to represent yourself however you wish.”

With that in mind, Wang proved himself to be the ultimate American. Wang showed one of his best collections to date – an uber-cool riff on “uptown privilege” and “downtown grit” rendered with a grown-up touch. It was well worth the trip across the river on a rainy Saturday evening.

The entire experience felt ultra-sophisticated, from the festive venue and the champagne, caviar and choir pre-show to Wang’s heartfelt remarks from high above the crowd during which he encouraged guests to use the hashtag #endaids in posts (December 1 was World AIDS Day).

The elevated sentiment extended to the clothes. Cool black leather looks, slouchy sportif elements, towel turbans, and Drone Smile graphic created in collaboration New York-based graffiti artist Katsu (@katsubot) were among the highlights. The pièce de résistance was a chic white T-Shirt dress that’s primed to make a true fashion statement on the red carpet.
