A Look Back at Renowned l.a.Eyeworks Campaigns

March 21, 2025

When you see it, you know it’s l.a.Eyeworks. It’s the ad campaign that changed optical history when it launched in 1981 and continues to do so until today.

Gai Gherardi, who passed away last Sunday due to an illness at the age of 87, will be dearly remembered by the global optical industry for the groundbreaking designs for l.a.Eyeworks, by her CFDA community of members, and by all the legends, stars, and fans who wore her designs.

The l.a.Eyeworks portrait campaign shot by photographer Greg Gorman will forever immortalize her designs via her community of friends of mega-bright stars and relationship with the avant-garde. Legends like Grace Jones, Jodie Foster, Chaka Khan, Andy Warhol, RuPaul, Eartha Kitt, and many others posed for the CFDA member, celebrating fame, beauty, gender, and attraction—all seen through great glasses.

And, of course, the campaign’s signature tagline will ring true throughout eternity: “A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.”

Indeed it is.
