How to Engage in the Secondhand Market

November 17, 2020

The CFDA hosted a webinar on Enabling Circular Fashion: How to Engage in the Secondhand Market where industry experts from Eileen Fisher, Mara Hoffman, Brass Clothing and Recurate led a conversation on how their brands have approached their own resale programs, the challenge and opportunities that present themselves, engaging with their customer and how they’ve navigated resale during COVID-19. Listen to the full webinar above.

If you’re thinking about getting into the resale market, consider these criteria:

  1. Speak to your customer. Is this something they are interested in? Will they engage? How do they want to engage?
  2. Scalability and logistics considerations
  3. Capacity for administering the resale program
  4. Availability of your product: Do you have access to that product data?
  5. How do you differentiate the experience between new products and used products?
  6. What do the wholesale relationships need to look like if you are engaging with a resale vendor?
  7. Branding and customer education: Engaging with your customer on their resale journey
  8. Costs associated with all these components
  9. What model of a resale program are you considering?
    • Hand-off: Peer-to-peer reselling, letting our community engage with one another
    • Hand-On: brand takes possession of inventory, cleans and resells the product

Please feel free to connect with the webinar moderator, Adam Siegel at adam@recurate.com, if you have questions about branded resale or are looking for resources to engage in the secondhand market.
