The CFDA hosted a webinar with Celia Sears, Founder and President of Show Division, to begin a dialogue on how the American fashion industry can ensure diversity and inclusivity backstage. Models of color have not been receiving the proper hair and makeup care backstage, whether they are walking in a runway show or appearing in front of the camera for an editorial shoot. Their hair texture and skin color require different products, maintenance, skill and attention.
Sears and a panel of industry experts discussed the necessary education that is needed to ensure that all makeup artists and hair stylists are trained properly to work with models of color. The experts also brought attention to why this change must come from the top down. Decision-makers like designers and creative directors must hold themselves accountable in changing backstage culture and hiring proficient and capable teams.
Watch the full conversation to learn how these industry professionals have worked to ensure that backstage culture is more equitable and diverse.
Thank you to Kendall Dorsey, Romero Jennings, Nai’vasha Johnson, Tamu McPherson, Johnnie Sapong and Celia Sears for leading this conversation.
