Marc Alary is a French-born, New York-based jewelry designer who launched his first fine jewelry collection in November 2009. Alary has enjoyed continued attention from the fashion press and is primed to develop further with his latest collection, which arrived in spring 2013, along with a new e-commerce website.
After growing up in Toulouse, France, Alary moved to Paris to study Graphic Design and Illustration at the prestigious École Supérieure de Design, d’Art Graphique et d’Architecture Intérieure.
In 2003, Alary moved to New York where he started to work on designing prints, graphics and T-shirts for DKNY and Louis Vuitton.
After 2 years, Alary began to freelance for Marc Jacobs designing everything from graphics for T-shirts, jackets and linings, to designing hardware for bags. His work went on to include redesigning the Little Marc Jacobs logo, and designing jewelry for the main line collection. After freelancing for several years, Alary watched his role grow into one that covered all lines of the company: the main line, Marc By Marc Jacobs and Little Marc Jacobs.
It was while working at Marc Jacobs that Alary decided to take his passion for jewelry further and launched his own collection in 2009. Alary left Marc Jacobs in 2011 to concentrate on the growing demands of his business. In 2012, Marc was garnering so much attention from the industry for his craftsmanship and creativity that he was offered an exciting opportunity at KENZO. Always up for a challenge and an adventure, Alary accepted the position at KENZO while continuing to work on his own collections.
Marc Alary’s debut collection of animal jewelry in gold and precious stones, entitled “Ménagerie,” draws its inspiration from childhood, where an array of antiques and trinkets remain vividly alive in Alary’s memories and were sources of endless fascination. During Alary’s childhood, the animal kingdom acquired mythic powers and intensity, and these imaginary safaris became a continual inspiration. “Ménagerie” was Alary’s tribute to that world, an inventive re-creation of it. Elephants, panthers, zebras and flamingos are all present in the collection, rendered in gold platinum, diamonds, sapphires, rubies and tourmalines. The collection also includes articulated monkeys cheekily clutching precious stones with their tails and hands.
Marc Alary’s latest collection, introduced in March 2013, further explores his passion for whimsical decadence and the animal kingdom.
