NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

From Far and Wide: The NYFW Fund Editors

September 21, 2024

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is a global stage. Visitors from all around the world converge in our city twice a year for the American collections and the creative design excellence coming out of our country. And while CFDA welcomes all, we do send out a handful of special invitations to international editors who are part of the NYFW Fund.

The NYFW Fund, made possible through the support of brand contributions, is a CFDA initiative, and as the sole organizer of the Official NYFW Schedule, this program helps to expand the global reach and raise visibility for our designers.

CFDA caught up with three of our NYFW Fund editors this season: Delphine Perroy, editor of France’s Madame Figaro, Hyeyeon Yoon, senior fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar Korea, and Patricia Rodríguez, fashion editor of Spain’s El País and S Moda. We got get their hot takes on favorite places in the city, highlights of the week, and what they wear to the shows.

What excites you about New York Fashion Week?

This was my first time visiting New York for Fashion Week in my eight years as a journalist. I’ve only been to European fashion weeks until now, and I was so excited to see what the bustling city offered this season.

How do you approach dressing and getting ready for NYFW?

Powerful inner layers and jewelry will be essential. Since I need to stay stylish and comfortable, I’m guessing my go-to item will be a pair of sturdy boots for a fashionable shoes for a busy day.

What are some essentials for you when traveling?

A shower head with a water filter is a must. In Korea, there are many portable shower heads that are easy to carry. Also, a face mask to rejuvenate tired skin and patches to reduce leg swelling are key.

What are some of your favorite places to frequent during your stay in New York City?

Whenever I’m in New York, I always stop by Trader Joe’s to pick up jelly and snacks that my niece loves. I also enjoy visiting SoHo for its unique shops, including Kith, and browsing through stores with exotic ceramics and stationery.

What excites you about New York Fashion Week?

What I love about this city is the positive, joyful energy that emanates from this fashion week. Personally, I’m more of a classicist, but I know that with the leading names in American fashion, such as Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Tory Burch and Tommy Hilfiger, you always project yourself onto pieces that you’d like to make your own.

In recent years, other fashion houses have emerged in the same vein, such as Khaite and Ulla Johnson, who also create highly wearable collections. Brands like 3.1 Phillip Lim and Altuzarra are often my favorites and deserve to be better represented on the international scene. I was curious to discover LaQuan Smith this season as his work seems to me very accomplished, with a certain modernity.

How do you approach dressing and getting ready for NYFW?

My style is rather classic, with pieces borrowed from the men’s wardrobe. The oversized trend corresponds to the comfort I like to have, especially when I travel a lot.

What are some of your favorite places to frequent during your stay in New York City?

Laobra Café in Brooklyn, Waverly Inn and Garden, Emporio Trattoria, and I always visit Clic if I have the time.

What excites you about New York Fashion Week?

The energy that the city transmits during fashion week is incredible to me. The people, the places, so many things happening at the same time in so many places. I was looking forward to seeing how the creative community expressed its feelings about the current situation and the upcoming elections.

How do you approach dressing and getting ready for NYFW?

Honestly, the most important requirement for me is comfort, so I always start with the feet. I choose some comfortable shoes and go up from there.

What are some essential items for you when you travel?

The list of essentials is quite long: always a book and the computer to advance pending texts on the plane. In the toiletry bag, several balms to prevent my lips from drying out, some moisturizing creams, a sleeping mask and melatonin pills to avoid jet lag.

What are some of your favorite places (shops, restaurants, museums, parks) to frequent during your stay in New York City?

I like to go discover new brands at ESSX or Flying Solo or see what products are successful at Sephora. Also, I take time to get lost in bookstores to get a good load of books on fashion, art or design, which are sometimes difficult to find in Madrid. I declare myself addicted to noodles and spicy chili oil from Xi’an Famous Foods and enjoy sitting on any terrace to watch people pass by.
