When Carolina Herrera unveils her new collection at the Museum of Modern Art tonight, it marks a first time the world-famous institution is host to a New York Fashion Week runway show.
That the designer chose MoMA as her venue makes perfect sense. Mrs. Herrera not just loves contemporary art, she also has much history with it. Most notably, she’s had close friendships with Robert Mapplethorpe and stood model for him, as well as Andy Warhol – the results of which are nothing short of iconic.
She chose MoMA this season for a simple reason. “I love the MoMA!” she said. “It’s definitely one of the most important museums of modern art in the world. I am very excited to show at the garden because it is a magical place to me. When I think of modern and contemporary art here, I immediately think about color, and this has given me a lot of inspiration through the years.”
The museum provides the perfect backdrop to the Spring 2018 lineup.
“The inspiration is color,” she noted. “I wanted the collection to be very vibrant and with a lot of energy. This collection is about color, glamour, and movement.”
Which, in essence, is the important message of this season: “Color is powerful; it’s in art, in fashion, and everywhere in the world.”
