Diane von Furstenberg’s inspiring journey is well-documented. Born in Brussels, Belgium, she married a European prince, moved to Manhattan, designed the wrap dress that empowered millions of women and made her an entrepreneur, and established herself as New York icon. To use one of her own phrases, she became the woman she wanted to be, as in someone who is always “In Charge” and never shy to “Own it.”

Now, DVF’s native city is honoring her with Woman Before Fashion, an exhibition at the Fashion & Lace Museum in Brussels that was unveiled to the public on April 21 and will remain open until January 7, 2024.

Curated by Nicolas Lor, it is an homage to the designer’s impactful fashion career. There’s a natural focus on the wrap dress, which turns 50 next year.

“It is both exciting and emotional to be honored with the first European exhibition of my work in my native city, Brussels,” said von Furstenberg, who traveled to her native city for last week’s opening.

Here, some impressions from the inspiring exhibition.
