It was September 2014 during Milan Fashion Week. I wasn’t planning to attend the Moschino show, but I changed my mind at the last minute – and what an excellent decision that was.
Jeremy Scott delivered a Barbie extravaganza ripe for fashion history books. The audience sat in awe as every version of the world’s #1 fashion doll whizzed by and Barbie’s lifestyle – from day to evening – played itself out in front of our eyes. Here she was, jogging, shopping, on roller-skates, headed to the beach or to a glamorous ball.
It was a feast of pink and blonde, its subtext signaling the 2019 CFDA Board of Directors’ Tribute award recipient’s enduring inspiration and influence worldwide. She was Scott’s only reference that season.
“There are no other references because she encompasses everything,” Scott told The Telegraph of London. “She’s had every job. She’s even been an astronaut. Barbie basically is the full package – plus she loves an evening dress which is very important for Moschino.
“I think Barbie brings joy,” he added. “And that’s what I try and do in my work.”
More so than joy, it was Moschino magic – thanks to none other than our 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards honoree Barbie!
