To call it a green thumb would be putting it lightly. Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren’s new bridal collection was a riot of flowers. The Dutch design duo drew on three floral motifs for Fall 2019—blooming, couture, and millefeuille—that sprouted up in bold and inventive new ways.
“Our focus lies with a surreal and sculptural approach to luxury bridal wear,” the designers said via email. “The collection is an evolution of signature design elements that are typically Viktor&Rolf: the bow, flowers, and iconic tulle.”
It added up to a versatile collection that was bursting with fresh ideas for fall brides.
There was a delightfully over-the-top ball skirt that broke into a swirl of pleated tulle petals next to a sleek column stitched with long-stemmed wildflowers at the bodice that was pretty enough to replace the bouquet on the wedding day. A sleeveless gown in silk crepe dotted in spangly flower degrade crystals ran alongside a retro minidress spun from wispy floral-embroidered chiffon. With so much to ogle in any given look, it gave new meaning to “flower power.”
The standout off-the-shoulder gown—with a voluminous skirt and a cascading Watteau train—featured intricately draped rosebuds that transformed into puff princess sleeves. The dress’s spectacular proportions were nothing short of extravagant, but the petal work at the shoulders remained soft in comparison. A marriage of contrasts, the drama and delicacy together jarred in an appealing way.
Underneath all of those flowers, Fall 2019 saw a new signature sprout up in the form of patchwork lace. Densely covered with ruffles and beads, the styles offered up a bohemian side of the brand. Viktor&Rolf purists will gravitate toward the dress with the illusion neckline and sheer ruffles throughout. Embellishment enthusiasts may reach for the alternative gown, which boldly added a high collar and frilly sleeves to the mix. Let’s just say none were made with shrinking violets in mind.
