Universal Standard Unveils Experiental Retail Concept

November 26, 2019

Community with a capital “C” is key to Universal Standard 1:1, the new experiential retail space “for all of US, as we are” located on the fourth floor at 192 Mercer Street.

Universal Standard, the fashion brand founded by Polina Veksler and Alexandra Waldman with the overarching mission of “Fashion Freedom” and style without size barriers, unveiled its newest addition in New York City last week.

“Everything is changing. Shopping in a physical space needs to be about much more than the purchase transaction,” Waldman, who serves as Universal Standard’s CCO, explained. “Bringing delight and value beyond the product is everything. We wanted to create a space our customers felt was theirs as well – their pied a terre in the heart of every city a 1:1 exists.”

Universal Standard 1:1 is both a shopping and a community space focused on new and personalized experiences for customers – via curated programming for example. Shoppers can shop solo or in groups, and reserve the space for their personal use — think community gatherings such as dinners, networking, book clubs, or exhibitions, for example, along with Universal Standard programming and community events.

In addition to Universal Standard items curated to reflect the location, the company is partnering with local brands, artists, and organizations for unique events and gatherings. Customers can book personalized one-on-one styling appointments and group shopping experiences with trained Universal Standard stylists.

“Of course there is the private, bespoke styling experience, but there are also amazing events hosted by US, and perhaps most uniquely of all, the 1:1 spaces themselves are available to our customers for their own private events – absolutely for free,” Waldman added. “There are no rental fees, no membership fees  because we have learned that generosity is never wasted on our customers. Universal Standard is about access – period – and the community we see coming together in these spaces all over the country is everything we intended to bring into being when we started our company.”

New York City is the fifth such location, after Seattle, Chicago, Portland and Houston. There are plans for 10 more openings over the next 12 months.
