Ulla Johnson on “Living in Her Work”

In 1998, CFDA member and native New Yorker Ulla Johnson launched her eponymous line shortly after graduation. It received immediate attention from fashion press and retailers, who celebrated her innate gift to materialize art into clothing, drawing inspirations from her travels around the world.

The woman is always front and center in her praxis: Johnson is the embodiment of a creator for her own—one who is mad for flowers and nature, reveres history and manifests it into innovation, and considers themself a lifelong academic of art and craft.

A cornerstone show during New York Fashion Week, Johnson has captivated audiences through beautiful collections and show experiences with artist collaborations on set designs across boroughs with an affinity to Brooklyn, where she lives – not to mention her rapidly-growing business with an increasing number of store openings for fans of the Ulla Johnson universe who find their tribe at her brick and mortars or retailers across the world who carry the brand.

After almost 30 years in business, it was a no-brainer to honor the CFDA member as Designer of the Year at the American Image Awards, taking place April 29 in New York City, and to celebrate her exemplary leadership as an inimitable designer in our American fashion industry.

Where, what or who is the source of your biggest inspiration for your life and design?

The study of fine art, the gestures, prints and movement is often the starting point of my collections. I’m also a woman designing for women, and I really do live in my work. I know how I want a piece to make me feel. Emotion sits at the heart of all we do. I firmly believe women dress for themselves—they want to look amazing for themselves. If you can wear something that makes you feel truly seen for who you are? Well, then—my work is done.

What does receiving this honor of Designer of the Year at the American Image Awards mean to you?

It’s a great honor to be recognized by the industry. Fashion lifts us up and makes us feel the best version of ourselves. My life’s work has been devoted to the creation of clothing that allows and encourages women to feel both powerful and beautiful. I think there is something joyful, optimistic, and powerful about what we do. We can be wildly feminine and still be strong.

What exciting things can we look forward to in the world of Ulla Johnson?

Our retail footprint is growing – our first international shop opens in Harrods in London this June followed by a boutique opening on Madison Avenue in the Fall, our second in the city.

Also launching this summer and rooted in a shared admiration of the natural world and love of travel, we have a High Summer residency at wellness resort Quinta da Comporta, in Comporta, Portugal, that includes a boutique pop-up and takeover of the Spa & Pool.
