Chuks Collins designs for both men and women with the mission to remind his clients to “Elevate your sense of Style.” As part of a CFDA series highlighting emerging designers of color, we asked Collins three questions.

What was your inspiration for becoming a designer?

Growing up, I always had a passion for creating my own designs. I would see people on the street, and I would want to undress and redress them in my headspace.  My imagination would allow me to instantly redesign whatever they were wearing. I recognized early on that I possessed a gift to create. I love to make people look good. Illustrating and custom design have always been my forte. The devotion I have for the design process was my driving force at an early age. I design clothes for the girl in every woman to embody and express their core, connect to their tribe, and wear as armor along the way.

What were your challenges in the beginning? Or do you possess any challenges now, as a black designer in this business?

Yes, yes, yes! In the beginning my challenge was being a male African wanting a career as a designer, but fashion design wasn’t considered a prestigious career for an African man. I acquired three degrees, attended design school, and decided I’m going to pursue this! Funding is also a challenge. It’s a major problem we have in the industry. You can have all the talents in the world, but without funding, black designers are unable to be heard. We do not always get the opportunities, and we need more platforms for black designers. The big brands, we appreciate them and will work for them, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with a few of the brands, but I believe our voice should be heard.

What advice quote would you give to emerging designers who want to be successful in this business?

“You have to have passion for the art; it is what will take you far” and “Be true to yourself- no matter how many nos you get, one day the door will open, and you will get your break.”
