Selima Salaun and Henry Zankov came together on Wednesday evening at the Selima Optique store at 7 Bond Street. The reason? To celebrate the Selima Optique x Zankov collection of sunglasses, now available exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman and Selima Optique boutiques and online.

No wind, no rain could stop a fashionable crowd from turning out and showing their support, including Rachel Scott of Diotima, Presley Oldman, Julie Gilhart, Christina Ripley, Judy Collinson, Jessica Iredale, PC Chandra, and many more.

The idea for the collaboration came up two years ago at another Bond Street classic, Il Buco.

“We were at the restaurant with some friends,” Zankov recalled. “Coincidentally, they were all in Zankov, and Selima, who was sitting at the table next to us, came over and asked what we were wearing, then suggested we do something together.”

Salaun added, “I remember thinking, ‘who are you, you all look so amazing.’ He was wearing my frames but we had never met in person. I bumped into Henry in SoHo two weeks later, and that’s how it all started.”

It was indeed a meeting of two creative minds that led to the fabulous collection of shades.

The collection features three signature Selima styles reimagined by Zankov in new colors: The Aleksandr square acetate frame with color contrasts between the face and arms; the Toni 1970s Italian police officer-like aviator style with a lightweight metal frame, and the minimalist Carolyn classic inspired by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.

“We took our time because we wanted to get it right,” Zankov explained. “The visual language for Zankov is established. We had done furniture and home; I wanted to try something new. I thought, how do we express the Zankov visual language in a different way? Working with Selima, I felt like a kid in a candy store.”

The sentiment is mutual. “I adore him,” Salaun said. “He’s one of the most amazing designers.”
