Noteworthy Diversity at NYFW: Women’s

February 23, 2017

Whether intended or not, Marc Jacobs kicked off his memorable fall show with a clear statement for diversity. His first few exits were made by models Slick Woods, Adwoa Aboah, Lineisy Montero, Cleo Cwiek, and Grace Cheng, and the diversity continued throughout the final show of fashion week.

As diversity is an important pillar of the CFDA that we encourage each season, Jacobs’s casting is worth a shoutout. He wasn’t the only designer to embrace models of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes for Fall 2017. According to the Fashion Spot X Model Alliance Diversity Report, this was the first time that every show featured at least one model of color. The shows were the most racially diverse since Fall 2016 with only a small percentage difference. The report stated that overall, 68.5 percent of castings were white and 31.5 percent were nonwhite this season. The most diverse shows included Gypsy Sport, Chromat, Kimora Lee Simmons, Yeezy, Brandon Maxwell, Public School and Tracy Reese.

Diversity didn’t just play out via ethnicity. Transgender models, such as Monés, Carmen Carrera, Aurel Haize Odogbo, Leyna Bloom and Juliana Huxtable at Chromat,  and a variety of body types, most notably Ashley Graham at Michael Kors and Georgia Pratt, Saffi Karina, and Precious Lee among others at Christian Siriano, also added to New York’s range.
