During last week’s Earth Day, Gigi Burris O’Hara moderated a discussion on sustainability with three emerging female designers, who were each recognized as Forbes 30 Under 30.

Kate Barton, a 2024 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, Olivia Cheng, the 2024 CFDA | Genesis House AAPI Design + Innovation Grant winner, and Caroline Zimbalist joined the CFDA member at the Diane von Furstenberg flagship in New York City to discuss how they apply innovative and sustainability-oriented practices: from eco-friendly material, to minimal waste designs, to near market (Made in America) production.

The conversation delved into the challenges and opportunities of creating with the environment in mind, as well as the experience and ambitions of being a young, female designer.

“Having a community of people to ask for help is really important,” said Barton. “The CFDA was really helpful for me in finding the right production partners. Developing locally keeps the craft intact.”

It was a fitting curation, considering Burris O’Hara’s balance with operating her namesake millinery business and non-profit Closely Crafted, an organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the legacy of Made-In-America fashion.
