Everything Bridal with Monique Lhuillier

April 6, 2017

Marc Karimzadeh

Monique Lhuillier and Tom Bugbee tied the knot in Los Angeles, where the pair is based, in 1995. Her career as a bone fide bridal designer took off right after. We asked Lhuillier about her own wedding gown, her tips for brides and her favorite wedding memory.

Describe your wedding gown and why you chose this particular design.

It was hard to find a fashion-forward option when I began wedding dress shopping and I ended up choosing a very traditional dress. It was a silk white duchess satin dropped-waist gown, off the shoulders, with lace appliques and a bustled skirt. I also had a long cathedral veil to match. But it was actually this experience that made me become a designer. I designed my first collection the year after I was married.

What is your favorite memory of your wedding?

Being a bride is about feeling special and celebrating with friends and family. A bride should feel confident and beautiful and I was lucky enough to experience all of that on my wedding day.

What is the main piece of advice you would give to brides?

I always tell brides to follow their instincts, but also to keep an open mind. Many dresses look one way on a hanger or in a picture, so it is important for a bride to try on a few styles to see which she feels the most comfortable and beautiful in.
