Known for her innovate silhouettes and minimalistic sensibility, Ji Oh has gained attention from editors and retailers around the world. Oh produces close to home, in New York City. The designer was selected to be a part of CFDA’s Born in the USA shop at Fred Segal on Sunset Boulevard in celebration of her outstanding commitment to domestic manufacturing. We caught up with her to hear why this will always be an integral part of her business.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
Going through my dad’s closest and trying his suit jackets on. I found it really chic.
What inspired you to work in fashion and start your own collection?
I’ve loved clothes since I was really young. Going to fashion school to fuel my love for clothes was the right decision. Since attending Parsons and Central Saint Martins, the next step was to own and create my own collection. In 2014, I started my namesake label.
How would you describe your brand?
Androgynous, utilitarian, progressive, and provocative.
What sets you apart from other designers?
My reinterpretation on uniform.
Tell us about where your collection is made. Why is it important to you to produce domestically?
My collections are made in New York City. It is important to produce domestically because it gives back to supporting local businesses and easy to control quality checks.
Describe one career highlight so far.
Being a part of many international Vogues including the U.S.
Where do you see your brand headed? What are your goals for the future?
Because my designs are fluid in gender, I hope to cross over and gain male consumers. I’d love to be able to bridge the gap between men and women.
