Career Conversations: Kéla Walker On The Intersection Of Fashion And Broadcasting

July 15, 2024

Rashad Benton

Hailing from the outskirts of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Kéla Walker carves a unique path in the realm of entertainment as a consummate seven-time Emmy-nominated television host. Her journey from small-town roots to edgy Brooklyn streets epitomize the fusion of fashion and media. Walker’s magnetic charisma and sartorial finesse have solidified her as a coveted presence reporting on the world’s grandest stages.

Her childhood was steeped in creativity, where she penned stories and nurtured a flair for narrative. It was during her formative years in Brooklyn that her passion for media crystallized a path diverging from earlier aspirations in law.

As Walker continues to redefine the intersection of fashion and media, her journey reflects a relentless pursuit of unique experiences and global perspectives. Rooted in familial style wisdom passed down from her mother and grandmothers, her affinity for the unconventional resonates in her globetrotting spirit, choosing paths less traveled to destinations far-flung from the norm. Her presence both on and off the red carpet embodies the essence of style and substance, inspiring others to embrace their own distinctive journeys.

Before amassing over 100,000 followers on social media, receiving awards and traveling extensively, what was Kéla Walker’s life like?

Before all of that, my focus was on pursuing happiness and engaging in activities that truly fulfilled me. I’ve always had a strong passion for working in media, and I was fortunate to secure a position in my desired field right after college. Instead of rushing into any job to pay off student loans, I prioritized opportunities that aligned with my passions. I approached life with a sense of gratitude and intentionality. I vividly remember thinking, “I’m single, I don’t have any children, and I live in the greatest city in the world.” This mindset allowed me to fully embrace life’s experiences. I firmly believe we only have one life to live, so being present and showing up wholeheartedly in every aspect of my life became a guiding principle for me.

With your English degree in tow, where and how did you start out?

I began my journey at a local NYC network starting as a temporary employee with a clear goal of getting my foot in the door. Over the years, I remained dedicated to the network, eventually transitioning to full-time as assistant to the general manager. Quickly, it became evident that my role extended far beyond assistance; I was actively producing content and spearheading projects like the inaugural “Fashion in Focus” show.

Progressing from assistant to segment producer marked a natural and fulfilling evolution in my career. This journey was characterized by continuous learning and growth within the network and the broader industry. Networking and word-of-mouth referrals became instrumental, propelling me into diverse opportunities such as working prestigious red-carpet events and taking on freelance assignments.

Embracing the grind of media, I pursued these opportunities with openness and determination. After becoming fully vested in my role, I made the decision to transition into independent work, leveraging my experience to explore new creative avenues beyond my initial network.

Who does Kéla work for? Are you contracting out your services on a retainer, or is there a mixture? You’re going from the media pit at the Met Gala to Bridgerton sets.

I often field this question, and the answer varies based on the context. When I’m back home, I describe myself as someone who creates media: hosting, producing, and crafting content both online and on-air. I give voice to diverse stories and perspectives, amplifying the narratives of people, places, and events. In professional settings like conferences, I introduce myself as a seven-time Emmy-nominated television host and producer. I collaborate with brands and individuals, continuing to elevate voices and narratives across various platforms.

Ultimately, I consider myself a storyteller, adapting my description to fit the audience and environment. Sometimes, you must tailor your resume to highlight the breadth of your experience and the impact of your work.

Interesting, that’s quite a niche way of employment. Can you dig into how this fusion has uniquely positioned you in the entertainment world and how it has influenced your storytelling style?

This evolution has allowed me to explore storytelling in innovative ways that were previously uncharted. Embracing the digital landscape, I’ve experimented with new formats and platforms to engage with audiences on a deeper level. It’s been a journey of trial and error, learning to navigate and harness the power of digital media to amplify narratives and connect with diverse audiences.

When people express interest in following a similar path, I emphasize the importance of passion and authenticity. Much like Dr. Oz, who brings his medical expertise and unique personality to his role as a talk-show host, I believe in leveraging my skills and insights to enrich the media landscape. This multidimensional approach not only expands my creative horizons but also allows me to make meaningful contributions to the art of storytelling in the digital age.

Your personal style is clearly a defining aspect of your identity, evident from your social media presence. The added influence of a blend of Southern and Northern upbringing adds another layer of understanding to this. Could you share how this diverse background has shaped the way you express yourself to the world?

Fashion and style have always been a powerful form of expression for me, deeply rooted in the traditions passed down by my grandmothers, one of which is attending church in meticulously coordinated “Sunday Best” outfits. When I get dressed, one of the first things I reach for is my watch. No matter the look or the vibe I’m going for, I can’t start my day without it. My watch isn’t just a timepiece but a cherished symbol connecting me deeply to my roots and aspirations. Growing up, my mother wore a luxurious Cartier watch, and I admired its elegance and significance. It became a beacon of my ambition, a tangible goal I eventually achieved when I acquired my own Cartier timepiece a few years ago. Now, wearing it daily is non-negotiable for me; it’s a part of my identity and a constant reminder of the resilience and determination I inherited from my mother. Beyond its practical function, my watch embodies the value of time itself—how precious and fleeting it can be, urging me to make every moment count.

To me, dressing well is a gesture of respect and readiness for any occasion. It’s about aligning my appearance with the significance of the event, effortlessly blending into any setting while conveying confidence and elegance. Whether at a professional engagement or a social gathering, my attire reflects not only my personal identity but also serves as a powerful form of nonverbal communication, connecting with others on a deeper level.

What are you enjoying about your career right now?

The incredible variety it offers. On one hand, I get to participate in traditional media by telling stories on-air, which is incredibly fulfilling. On the other hand, I have the opportunity to collaborate with brands and infuse my own creative touch into their products or campaigns.

The diversity of my work is what keeps me engaged—it’s never the same day-to-day. I often liken it to a rollercoaster ride, full of twists, bumps, ups, and downs. There are moments when it feels stagnant, like it’s sitting at the docks, and then suddenly it takes off again. This unpredictability and constant evolution are what make my career so enjoyable. I appreciate not being pigeonholed into one type of work; instead, I thrive on the versatility and the chance to explore different facets of media.

Earning seven Emmy nominations is a remarkable achievement. How has this recognition impacted your career and personal brand, and what does it mean to you on a deeper, more personal level?

I specialize in what some may consider as “fluff.” I don’t save lives or deliver babies; instead, I focus on bringing beauty and joy to the world. When I received my first Emmy nomination, my immediate reaction was, “Oh my gosh!” It was a moment of profound validation—one that I hadn’t realized I needed or desired until that point.

As someone who is self-taught and didn’t undergo formal media training, that first nomination for hosting held a special significance for me. Being recognized alongside major networks like ABC and Channel 7 was surreal. While I haven’t won an Emmy yet, being nominated has been beyond my wildest dreams. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve poured into my craft, proving to myself that I am skilled in what I do. These nominations have placed me among the crème de la crème of New York City media, an honor that continues to inspire and motivate me. They serve as a reminder of how far I’ve come and the limitless potential for what lies ahead in my career.

I am a testament to my ancestors’ dreams. One of my grandmothers cleaned homes, while the other worked in a factory. Today, I find myself walking red carpets, engaging with celebrities, and asking questions like “What’s it like at the Met Gala?” This journey reassures me that what I do holds significance. I carry the legacies of my grandmothers with me, honoring their hard work and sacrifices by pursuing a path they could only dream of. Every glamorous moment and meaningful interaction in my career affirm that my work matters—not just to me, but as a continuation of their aspirations for a better life and brighter future.

Navigating the entertainment industry is famously daunting. What are some of the most difficult obstacles you’ve encountered?

The challenge lies in the misconception that anyone can replicate your craft. While I don’t mean to boast, there’s a distinct skill in captivating an audience, delivering precise messaging, and executing a comprehensive production seamlessly. The rise of social media has bred a belief that hosting is effortless—that everyone can step into your shoes. It’s almost dismissive, as if to say, ‘Give it a shot, see how it goes.’ I’ve encountered being marginalized myself; labeled as ‘just a stylist,’ when in truth, I’m not a stylist at all.

Do you believe you’re accomplishing all your goals? I ask because our aspirations often evolve as life leads us down unexpected paths. Reflecting on what you’ve previously aimed for, have those ambitions materialized for you?

I’ve certainly achieved significant milestones, yet with each accomplishment, new boxes to check off emerge. It’s a perpetual cycle of growth and adaptation. While I remain committed to my goals and mission, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of flexibility in navigating the journey.

I often reflect on the notion that divine plans for our lives often surpass our own aspirations. If I had settled after achieving a single goal, I might still be working a conventional 9-5 job in traditional media—nothing wrong with that path, but it wouldn’t have led to the community support and recognition I enjoy today. Embracing the unexpected twists and turns has been crucial. It’s allowed me to forge a path where I’m not only achieving personal success but also building a meaningful connection with a community that trusts and supports me.

As you gaze into the future, what are you eager to develop in your career? Are there any new projects or ambitions on their way?

My passion for what I do is multifaceted. Each day and month brings a new and exciting opportunity that I find deeply fulfilling. Looking ahead, I envision myself in syndication, working at a major media outlet where my presence and role are unmistakably clear—imagine tuning in at 7:00 p.m. every day to catch me in action. Syndication or hosting an entertainment series is a significant goal, driven not by specific names or titles but by the belief that God’s plans for me exceed my own ambitions.

Additionally, I’m drawn to the idea of launching a podcast. It would be a platform entirely my own, possibly featuring conversations with my sister and another where I sit in conversation as I highlight remarkable women, known or unknown to the public as we engage in profound discussions.
