In a world of mega-brands with mega-budgets for mega-celebrities on Oscars night, there is little space for the kind of unexpected, jaw-dropping red carpet moments we used to get — think Cher in dramatic Bob Mackie, Sharon Stone mixing Vera Wang with Gap, Janelle Monáe in silver Ralph Lauren, and Julia Roberts in vintage Valentino (vintage, it should be noted, was groundbreaking then).

Sunday night’s welcome surprises came by way of a few American brands at the event and adjacent parties. Gabrielle Union dazzled in a metallic Carolina Herrera number; Sydney Sweeney evoked old Hollywood glamour in a vintage Marc Bouwer dress first worn by Angelina Jolie at the 2004 Oscars, and Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy dressed a significant number of celebrities, including the fabulous Catherine O’ Hara, for the evening. We also loved seeing Jeremy Scott Couture back on the red carpet on Andrea Riseborough.
