American Camp We Hope to See at The Met Gala

May 3, 2019

Nicky Campbell

What’s American Camp? Think irreverent, fun, frothy, and delicious as that whip of cream on top of a cherry! There’s plenty to choose from – just check out our selects of favorite designers that we hope will make their way up the Met Museum’s steps at Monday’s Met Gala.

In honor of the museum’s new exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion (inspired by Susan Sontag’s Notes on Camp essay), we expect extra outré looks this year.

The Camp genre walks the line between extravagant and gaudy; tasteful and tacky. Instead of the expect red carpet fare, there should be an abundance of flamboyant, over-the-top-ness. From Nanny Fine in iconic Todd Oldham to Patrick Kelly’s take on Josephine Baker – bananas and all – and Christian Francis Roth’s dollar and crayon numbers, camp has been a part of American fashion history.

Made possible by Gucci, the evening will be led by co-chairs Alessandro Michele, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour.

Take a look back at some of the most fabulous American camp looks here.
