Sisters Aly and AJ Michalka have spent a long time in the spotlight. More commonly known as Aly and AJ, the duo found great success as teenagers with a number of smash hits, even starring in their own hit Disney Channel movie. Decades after they entered the industry, they are back on the road for the With Love From tour to promote their new album of the same name. Just as their sound has evolved, so has their style.
While their pop roots still come across, the new music reflects a more mature version of the two – incorporating folk and soulful influences reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac. Their music resonates with an audience from a new generation of fans who are getting to know the sisters outside of their former past teen pop-idol identity.
It’s clear that fashion plays a big role in the reinvention. The duo attended its first New York Fashion Week last year, making appearances at Peter Do, Monse, Collina Strada, and more.
A new, elevated look is on full display on their nationwide tour. Nailing the right looks for each performance was central to their experience.
“When we’re on stage, we want to be fully present in our body,” Aly and AJ said. “Comfort plays a huge role in choosing what we wear. We’ve learned a lot over the years when it comes to touring, especially when it comes to planning our stage look, it’s always been something we’ve had a hand in.”
When building their wardrobe, the performers drew upon a mix of classic American references – including Western-inspired suede jackets, cowboy boots, and vintage tees.
“Our personal style is very rooted in second hand/vintage pieces. At least half of our closet has been found treasure hunting online or in vintage shops around the U.S. I think our style will continue to evolve over time, but we really love dark denim, classic white t-shirts and simple suiting. It seems to never go out of style. We feel strong and empowering wearing these kinds of pieces on stage and in our daily life.”
They also turned to several American designers – notably Rosetta Getty. Pieces from the designer were lined up on the racks for the sold-out show at the iconic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
“We’ve been longtime fans of Rosetta Getty and her designs,” the pair said. “We happen to be good friends with Jessica Wu (the Director of Communications and Marketing) and she had recently seen some images of us in suiting that made her think we’d be a good fit wearing the brand on stage. So, of course, we jumped at the idea. We ended up quickly settling on the suede look soon after trying them on a couple months before the show.”
Even while performing in front an arena filled with 6,000 people, the clothing felt approachable and a part of the sisters’ everyday attire. Refined looks from Getty were paired nicely along with vintage white shirts, belts, and boots from Ann Mashburn.
If their recent work is any indication, Aly and AJ’s style evolution is just beginning.
