Agender Brand No Sesso is Making NYFW History

January 28, 2019

The Los Angeles-based label will serve fashion and diversity on the New York runway this February.

When No Sesso sends its signature whimsical garments down the runway next month, it will mark more than just the Los Angeles label’s New York Fashion Week debut. Pierre Davis, the designer behind the agender brand launched in 2015, will be the first trans-woman designer to show on the official calendar during NYFW.

No Sesso, a label Davis helms along with partner Arin Hayes, has always been about serving the community and fighting for culture. No Sesso challenges convention within the luxury fashion industry with a collection of bold, deconstructed silhouettes that blur the gender lines. The emerging fashion brand has developed a cult following by appealing to underrepresented and underserved communities, and championing an inclusive spirit. Its fan base, which includes Kelela and Erykah Badu, ultimately gives previously neglected communities a sense of belonging by “making nonconformity as beautiful and inclusive as it can possible be.”  The hashtag is #NOSESSOORDIE.

Here, Davis shares her inspiration behind the label that champions humanity above commerce.

Can you tell us about your background and why you decided to pursue a career in fashion?

I was always into fashion. My earliest fashion memories are from when I was in third grade drawing sketches of people wearing colorful clothes. By the time I got to middle school, I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. I started deconstructing and painting on clothes. When I finished high school I formally studied design and moved to LA.

How would you describe your brand and fashion philosophy?

No Sesso is an artisanal brand that is fun and whimsical, but also celebrates art and technicality – all under the umbrella of the brand’s overall curation and creative direction. But beyond the fashion, the brand is also about community and uplifting marginal groups and each other. No Sesso is very much an LA brand. The brand really took off here and allowed us to cultivate the more complete experience for the brand we always envisioned. We’re also more laid back in our demeanor, even though we take things very seriously. But we’re super-fun and easy to be around. We have a running joke about what we call our LA sweaters, which are always super cropped and usually sheer or loosely knit.

What sets your brand apart? What do you hope it brings to fashion?

No Sesso is about community. We work with our friends to build everything for the brand. That includes people who work in-house, our models, photographers, stylists, and more. We know and love everyone we work with, and our community is always getting bigger. And beyond that, No Sesso is an actual brand, not just a fashion label. It’s a lifestyle that encompasses fashion, our parties, embroidery workshops, or just hanging out and feeling that sense of community.

Hopefully, our brand will inspire people to be more community-minded and to realize not everything is just about aesthetics or commerce. It’s also about humanity. It is also important that people of all intersectional identities are given a fighting chance regardless of their identity. The playing field isn’t level in the world, and it is even more difficult in fashion. With that being said, talent should be merited and celebrated because it’s good, not just because it comes from a specific identity.

What was the inspiration behind your upcoming NYFWM show?

The show is inspired by business wear and evoking the spirit of the Glamazon regardless of gender. The idea of pushing weight and making things happen every when there seems to be no way. Apparently, we’ve also gotten a reputation of being a party brand, so we’re here to show the world that we mean business. We just run our business the way we want to.

Where do you see your brand in five years? Are there any goals you hope to accomplish?

In five years, the brand will be a global lifestyle brand that will continue to empower many more around the world and show them anything is possible.
