KidSuper’s Colm Dillane always has a surprise in store and this season was no different. Guests entering the Parc de la Villette to access the Halle Charlie Parker might have guessed he had a jazz theme in mind. But Dillane’s “From A Place I have Never Been”-themed show merged the fashion show with an art performance thanks to a creative partnership with artist Daniel Wurtzel. Known for kinetic sculptures that bring air to life, Dillane and Wurtzel collaborated, resulting in models and clothes work into the art piece.
Onstage was a tornado-effect wind tunnel that whipped faux fog and paper objects into the air. One model opened a briefcase to unleash a smattering of paper birds. Though typically focused on menswear, Dillane leaned heavily into elevated, colorful female looks with photo prints and mixed materials.
The designer also unveiled a new collection with the BAPE® Collective that featured BAPE® patterns and designs through the KidSuper lens – think Harujuku, Brooklyn and Paris. Then there was a capsule with WILDSIDE Yohji Yamamoto, plus other collaborative items such as a coat by HAMCUS that turns into a hammock, tailored pieces from Kody Phillips, and a hand-crocheted jacket crafted by Brazilian artist PIET.
It wasn’t a jazz performance, but scintillating in a most enchanting way.
