Our Mission

The CFDA mission is to strengthen the impact of American fashion globally by amplifying creative excellence, business longevity, and positive impact.

Letter from the Chairman

Thom Browne

at a time when the role of a designer is questioned every day, we must focus on what matters the most…

telling important stories that bring to life big ideas…

stories that make everyone think and question what they thought they knew…

stories that allow the world to see the pure creativity american fashion has to offer…

the strength of our industry lies not only behind the clothing… the shows… and what you see in stores… but through the way we challenge others to look at the world…

now more than ever, it is essential to foster creativity…

and lift the voices of those around us who champion american fashion…

i am proud to be a part of this important moment as chairman of the cfda board…

thom.

A Letter from the CFDA Chief Executive Officer and President

Steven Kolb

2025 was a year of steady, meaningful progress for the CFDA.

We strengthened our financial position, exceeded fundraising goals, and grew our fund balance, reinforcing our role as the leading organization supporting American fashion.

As the organizers of the official New York Fashion Week schedule, we continue to see the cultural relevance and market potential of American fashion expand. We relaunched CFDA.com and the Fashion Calendar to better serve our community, while partnerships with the Fashion Institute of Technology, Rockefeller Center, and Google Shopping broadened access and engagement.

We advanced key initiatives with the Frazier Family Foundation, Genesis House, and Tiffany & Co., expanded scholarship support with Veronica Beard, and welcomed new advocates through Friends of CFDA.

The CFDA Fashion Awards, presented by Amazon Fashion, reached a broader global audience, celebrating talent including Cynthia Rowley, Ralph Rucci, André Walker, and A$AP Rocky.

Member engagement grew, and Membership 2.0 is building a more connected and active community. At the center of this work are our designers, whose creativity and resilience define the industry.

Looking ahead to 2026, we will build on this momentum with a partnership with OpenAI and the launch of the Next Thread initiative, in collaboration with the Bezos Earth Fund, advancing innovation, sustainability, and American manufacturing.

Our focus remains clear: champion American design, support our members, and invest in what comes next.

I’m grateful for this community and energized for the work ahead.

Steven Kolb

The CFDA in 2025

The Council of Fashion Designers of America reinforced its influence on the global fashion industry through major events, talent development, and industry recognition in 2025.

The most visible moment was the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City, where leading designers such as Ralph Lauren and Thom Browne were honored for excellence in womenswear and menswear, respectively. Initiatives like the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund provided financial support and mentorship to diverse designers, helping shape a more inclusive industry.

Additionally, the CFDA promoted innovation and social responsibility, supporting forward-thinking practices within fashion. Together, these efforts underscored the CFDA’s ongoing role in elevating American fashion, supporting emerging designers, and setting cultural and ethical standards across the industry.

NYFW Travel Fund & Shuttle Bus

In an effort to build meaningful relationships between renowned international stakeholders in press and media and the designer brands who show during the week, the NYFW Travel Fund was established in 2022 to raise awareness of the importance of NYFW’s cultural, artistic, and economic impact.

The CFDA NYFW Travel Fund, both in February and September, has proudly supported international editors with financial and in-kind support made possible through brand contributions and strategic partnerships.

The CFDA NYFW Shuttle Bus presented by Google Shopping took editors and buyers around the city in stylish—and sustainable—ways during the February and September fashion weeks. It’s an effort to help with any logistical hurdles show-goers might face in transit between shows, and another step CFDA is taking for a greener fashion week. The NYFW Shuttle is also helping reduce the environmental impact, improving the week’s carbon footprint with group ridesharing.

Scholarships for Aspiring Designers: Financial support for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing sustainable fashion design, strengthening the industry’s talent pipeline.

Events and Storytelling: Curated events, exhibitions, and digital storytelling will showcase grantees and program outcomes, moving from industry engagement to public showcases of sustainable design excellence.

Insights from the Initiative will guide future Earth Fund investments in materials science, manufacturing innovation, and supply chain transformation, reinforcing CFDA’s leadership in sustainability, education, and creative advancement. The meeting was held at the Michael Kors Building at God’s Love We Deliver, bringing together CFDA members including Edmundo Castillo, Batsheva Hay, Gigi Burris O’Hara, Jonathan Cohen, Sam Edelman, Tom and Linda Platt, Diego Binetti, Gary Graham, and Michelle Ochs.

CFDA Announces End of Fur at New York Fashion Week

The CFDA announced it will no longer promote animal fur at any Official NYFW Schedule events, including its Fashion Calendar, website, and social media. This decision continues the CFDA’s collaboration with Humane World for Animals and Collective Fashion Justice.

Starting with September 2026 New York Fashion Week, collections on the Official NYFW Schedule may not include farmed or trapped fur from animals killed for their pelts, including mink, fox, rabbit, karakul lamb, chinchilla, coyote, and raccoon dog. An exemption applies only to fur obtained by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence hunting practices.

CFDA Glossary

Membership

Membership within the CFDA is extended to designers who demonstrate exemplary design creativity and execution and are recognized for their unique brand signature and positive impact. To qualify for CFDA membership consideration, a designer must be a U.S. citizen (or an international designer whose business is legally headquartered in the U.S.) who is producing a noteworthy collection of apparel, jewelry, accessories or textiles for a minimum of no less than five years, and who has garnered significant editorial and retail support and/or DTC sales. To be admitted as a Member of the organization, candidates are first ratified by the CFDA Board of Directors then elected by the CFDA membership.

Program Strategies Education / Scholarships

Committed to supporting American fashion designers of tomorrow, the CFDA Scholarship Fund has awarded approximately $4 million and 376 scholarships from 1996 to 2024.

Annually, the CFDA discovers exemplary student talent. Thanks to the generosity of the partners and donors, the CFDA Scholarship Fund continues to invest in the future of American fashion. Notable past recipients include Jacques Agbobly of AGBOBLY (2019), Peter Do (2013), Michelle Ochs of Et Ochs & Hervé Léger (2006), Chris Benz (2003), Jack McCollough of LOEWE (2001), and Peter Som (1996).

Program Strategies Professional Development

Professional Development provides high-value thought leadership engagements alongside dynamic digital content via Industry Insights.

Programming is designed to support American designers and professionals’ stability, success, and growth via virtual conversations, digital resource material, workshops, business mentorship, roundtable discussions, and networking events.

For over a decade, notable designers, innovators, experts, and organizations in the fashion industry have joined the CFDA to contribute to our thought leadership programming covering topics from marketing, retail, tech and innovation, legal, finance, sustainability, supply chain, and DEI.

Program Strategies Sustainability Initiatives

The CFDA has championed sustainability as a core program pillar for over a decade. The organization believes ingenuity, imagination, and creative capital are vital to transforming fashion and shifting towards a climate-safe, nature-safe, and socially positive sector.

The CFDA’s Sustainability Initiatives provide a comprehensive, integrated program suite guided by a theory of change that centers on education, knowledge sharing, open-access resources, and designer support through grants, awards, and tailored mentorship.

Program Strategies Fashion Supply Chain

The CFDA’s supply chain work includes programs and initiatives to help strengthen the foundational level of a designer’s business, from sourcing and manufacturing to shipping and logistics. Building educational opportunities and providing tangible relationships between designers and supply chain resources and experts are both at the core of all the CFDA’s supply chain related engagements. These efforts aim to strengthen local production, expand global networks for designers, and promote responsible practices across the industry.

Social Impact Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The IMPACT program was created to advance the economic mobility and social inclusion of underrepresented creatives in the American fashion industry by expanding access, supporting career development, and fostering community.

As a multi-pronged initiative, IMPACT drives equity through strategic awards, education, and cultural dialogue—investing in talent and shaping a more inclusive industry.

CFDA Fashion Awards

The CFDA Fashion Awards are an annual event honoring the most influential and innovative figures in the American fashion industry. The evening celebrates creativity and achievement across design categories, including womenswear, menswear, accessory, and emerging talent.

The Awards serve as the organization’s most significant fundraising initiative for the CFDA Foundation, the separate not-for-profit entity established to support charitable causes and industry-related activities.

CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund was established after 9/11 to help emerging designers and cultivate the next generation of American fashion talent. Since its inception, 200 designers have received mentoring and a total of more than $8 million. Of the designers who have gone through the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, 42 percent of those brands are fully or partially women owned, and 40 percent are fully or partially minority owned.

Designers eligible to apply must be in business for a minimum of 2 years. Their primary business must be based in the United States, should have no more than thirty full-time employees, and not exceed a total revenue of 10 million dollars per year.

Friends of the CFDA

The Friends of the CFDA is a select group of individuals and companies with a demonstrated interest in the fashion industry and a desire to support the philanthropic mission of the CFDA. Invited members serve as ambassadors of CFDA’s work and have the opportunity to build relationships with emerging and established designers, gain exclusive access to CFDA and partner events, and engage with leaders in the fashion industry.

Support from Friends of the CFDA helps fund the CFDA Foundation’s work.

New York Fashion Week / Fashion Calendar

New York Fashion Week (NYFW), held each February and September, represents the intersection of talent discovery, creative diversity, and business development.

Since acquiring the Fashion Calendar — the digital resource for events, shows, and fashion week highlights — in 2014, the CFDA has served as the organizer of the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule. As such, the organization sets the official dates and organizes the official NYFW schedule for womenswear, menswear, and bridal collections.

Partnerships

The CFDA’s Business Development and Partnerships is responsible for driving the organization’s revenue strategy by securing and managing key sponsorships and partnerships. It is central to funding CFDA initiatives, including Membership, the CFDA Fashion Awards, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, New York Fashion Week, sustainability efforts, and scholarship programs. Its primary role is to generate financial support through various partnership models that align with the CFDA’s mission and priorities.

By emphasizing both traditional sponsorship avenues—such as national and state grants, corporate philanthropy, and educational programs—it supports the organization’s growth while fostering sustainability in CFDA’s initiatives.

Philanthropy

The CFDA Foundation is a separate not-for-profit organization, which was created to raise funds for charity and industry activities. Through innovative partnerships with brands, retailers, and CFDA designers, the Foundation is able to leverage fashion and effectively generate awareness and funds for these charitable causes.
