Yesterday at Industria Studios Joseph Altuzarra was named the winner, representing the U.S. region for the 2013-14 International Woolmark Prize. Altuzarra was awarded for a three piece wool outfit, which included shoes. Also nominated were Bibhu Mohapatra, Creatures of the Wind, Daniel Vosovic, Giulietta, Ohne Titel, Timo Weiland, Tucker, Wes Gordon, and WHIT. The 10 U.S. finalists were chosen by the CFDA from America’s most promising and talented designers. Altuzarra receives $100,000 plus a slot in the international grand final, representing the U.S., in Milan in February 2014.
Joseph Altuzarra, upon receiving the award said, “We are so thrilled and couldn’t be more excited to have the chance to represent the U.S. in the International finals. We have learnt so much from this process and I feel very honored to be a part of it, thank you so much to Woolmark, the CFDA, the judges and congratulations to all the other finalists on their outstanding looks!”
The CFDA’s own Steven Kolb served as a judge for the competition and said, “The opportunity to help a designer like Altuzarra with such creative vision to have greater success is incredible. The International Woolmark Prize is about fostering a new generation of talent, recognizing and celebrating young designers and playing a role in bringing them to the next level.”
For the next six months, Altuzarra will develop a capsule collection in Merino wool, to be shown during the extraordinary event in Milan which will feature five finalists representing Australia, Asia, Europe, India/Middle East, and the U.S. The winner of the final will be awarded an additional $100,000 and the opportunity to have their clothing available at some of the world’s most notable retailers including Harvey Nichols in London, Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, 10 Corso Como in Milan, Joyce in China, David Jones in Sydney, and My Theresa in Germany.
