The Fashion Industry Responds to Hurricane Sandy

Last week Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the East Coast causing widespread damage from South Carolina to Maine.  The storm was one of the largest and most destructive to hit the East Coast in years causing widespread flooding and power outages.  Member designers and the fashion industry have teamed up with relief organizations to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Beginning on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 for the next two weeks, a group of Alice + Olivia volunteers will be serving warm breakfast at 2904 Neptune Avenue in Coney Island.  Along with meal each morning they will also bring fathered donations that are being collected at their offices and stores.

Join alice + Olivia at their holiday event at Saks Fifth Avenue on December 11th.  10% of proceeds from the shoes and accessories sales will support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.  Guests will also be able to personalize ornaments for the alice + olivia Christmas Tree will be sponsored in a public area in the Rockaways.  Jingle Bell Rockaway Karaoke Party. On Sunday November 4, 2012 the luxury store donated 10% of sales to the American Red Cross with a pledged minimum of $50,000.

The designer put together a program in her neighborhood to collect dry goods, canned foods, groceries, paper goods and bottled water which are being donated to areas devastated by the Hurricane.

Fashion Delivers

Consumers can also support Fashion Delivers relief for families affected by Hurricane Sandy; every $1 of cash donated through Fashion helps move $25 of new donated product. Additionally,, the fashion retail website curated by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, will donate an item to Fashion Delivers for every item purchased November 9 through 22.

Fashion Delivers has been directing the product donations through a wide range of community nonprofits working on the ground in the storm areas, including The Legacy Center serving Brooklyn and Queens, NY; Broad Channel American Legion Post serving Breezy Point, NY victims; Make the Road NY serving Staten Island; City of Secaucus NJ and the Community Food Bank of NJ, with offices in both central and southern areas of the state.


Fashion Girls for Humanity

On November 27th and 28th, Fashion Girls for Humanity will be holding a large-scale sample sale benefitting Architecture for Humanity and Waves For Water featuring a variety of designers from New York and the other fashion capitals. It will be held at the Bowery Hotel from 11 AM – 8 PM on the 27th (with an early admission period from 11-12 for $50), and 12 PM – 7 PM on the 28th. Admittance will be $5. Employees volunteered at Occupy Sandy in Brooklyn on November 6th to support Hurricane Sandy Relief.


Fashion Group International

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Fashion Group International will help raise funds devoted to Sandy Recovery relief efforts in support of United Way and City Harvest, two great charities that will donate funds to assist those most affected by the storm. The money raised will assist people who have been displaced or are struggling to recover from hurricane damage.

Now through November 30, 2012, customers in all Macy’s stores nationwide will be able to contribute $1.00 or more to hurricane recovery efforts. They will match customer donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis, up to $500,000, in an effort to give more than $1 million. All funds will be donated to the American Red Cross.
