Luxury womenswear designer Bibhu Mohapatra launched the first official collection under his eponymous label during New York Fashion week in 2009. Since then, he has presented eight collections.
Since his recent graduation from the CFDA’s Incubator, Bibhu has not only been working on his 2013 collections but has delved into his first theatrical collaboration – an expansive project for the Central New York Glimmerglass Festival’s 2012 main stage opera production of Verdi’s Aida, for which he is spearheading costume design.
A journey into costume design has always been an interest for Bibhu, so when the invitation from Glimmerglass Artistic and General Director Francesca Zambello came over a year ago, he was more than thrilled to accept.
Since then, he has been working tirelessly to design over 20 costumes for 6 principal artists and 40 chorus members.
Bibhu described the challenges and differences faced when designing for the theatrical stage instead of the runway – “Designing costumes that not only portray the character but withstand the seasons countless performances was challenging but very rewarding. Each costume needs to endure the dynamic choreography, performance after performance, and be extremely comfortable and unrestricting for the performers, allowing them to fuse their personality with the character. I also loved the challenge of designing for specific characters within the one story, by getting into their minds and really understanding their roles in the opera. It was like designing many little collections that all fit within the one story line. Combining my fashion based creative energy with this major classical opera to create a modern rendition of Aida was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience!”
Aida opens July 7.
