Respect for our customer and the needs of a woman. Respect for the craft and
the process of making clothes. Respect for the people we work with in this
industry. Respect for the history of fashion. Respect for future generations.
This is how we began working together: out of mutual respect for one another’s
talent, and for what each of us brings to Tome. This is something that was
evident when we first met whilst studying fashion design in Australia. We have
followed different career paths within the industry: heading design studios in
Europe and America (Alberta Ferretti and Derek Lam), buying luxury fashion for
international boutiques, and styling for and editing fashion publications. In 2010,
these experiences came full circle with Tome. The name speaks directly to our
collective experience and to creating a new volume of work together.
Tome is about clothing that satisfies both want and need by designing garments
that are pragmatic and serve a practical purpose. Philosophically, we are
concerned with uncomplicated, functional dressing that is stripped of superfluous
meanings. Literally, that translates into clothes that appear on the rack as they do
on the body.
We are two men who make clothing for women, so we constantly examine a
woman’s day-to-day needs. We believe in placing the Tome woman at the center
of our creative process, not at the end. Tome is about every woman and every
woman’s life, with each season focused on a woman who inspires us, from
Georgia O’Keeffe to Pina Bausch to Lauren Hutton. Like these great women, the
Tome woman knows what she wants, and that includes wanting to be inspired.
At the heart of the collection are the white shirt, the black dress, the jean, and the
trench coat – staples of a wardrobe that are imbued with a new life. Fashion
should be both aspirational and accessible. A journey. A sensual experience that
is easy to partake in.
We work very hard to create a sustainable practice in our business so that we
can insure our long terms plans for Tome. We are here to stay and to grow.
