A Peace Treaty
The CFDA Fashion Incubator 3.0 Class
A PEACE TREATY is an ethically produced luxury accessories company inspired by global art and culture, and is known for heirloom quality statement pieces with a focus on refined, ethnic and urban design, as well as a commitment to handmade production through centuries old techniques.
Determined to transform the contemporary fashion industry by pioneering a social business model within it, A PEACE TREATY was born in 2008 as a personal pact between Farah Malik, a Pakistani Muslim, and Dana Arbib, a Libyan Jew. Arbib and Malik met in Rome and discovered that they shared a love of fashion and a desire to increase awareness of ancient, disappearing crafting traditions. Intermingling their backgrounds, the two set about connecting discerning fashion connoisseurs with boutique-level artifacts from places typically seen only negatively through the media lens.
Working in regions of socio-political strife, A PEACE TREATY’s approach has helped to resuscitate small, family-run village crafts businesses that have become defunct or are struggling to compete with factory-based manufacturing. A component of the company’s mission also includes women’s social empowerment as it employs disabled, widowed, and marginalized women. Each artisan employed by A PEACE TREATY is paid above fair trade wages (up to eight times the local average).
Each season, A PEACE TREATY works with artisans to create collections that redefine and modernize ancient handmade textile and metalsmithing techniques. Working with master craftspeople in nine countries (Pakistan, India, Nepal, Turkey, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and The United States), the line injects life and trade back into local economies and creates viable income-generation opportunities for artisans, using ancient methods such as embroidery, weaving, woodblock printing, knitting, and mud printing, helping to elevate their products to the level of high design.
A PEACE TREATY’s work has included collaborations with high-profile brands and designers from Rugby Ralph Lauren to Jonathan Simkhai, and has been worn by celebrities such as Jemima Kirke, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, and Mary Kate Olsen. The founders have received recognition in the fields of both philanthropy and design from institutions like The World Bank and Parson’s School of Design, while A PEACE TREATY has gained vast media attention from publications including Vogue Paris and Forbes Magazine. A PEACE TREATY’s collections are carried by over 80 retailers worldwide.
