Below, our exclusive Q&A with CFDA designer and stylist to the stars, Rachel Zoe, who shares the inspiration behind her Spring 2014 collection, and the motivation for her latest book Living in Style: Inspiration and Advice for Everyday Glamour.
Tell us about the inspiration for your Spring 2014 collection…
My Spring 2014 collection was inspired by the modern jet set girl on safari. It’s a fresh take on exotic glamour, incorporating modern elements, polished silhouettes, innovative materials and blending classic with contemporary – there is something for every woman and every occasion.
Where do you usually look for inspiration? Do you have a particular process or creative methodology?
I take much of my inspiration from past decades – from music, books and film to vintage fashion and its icons. For me, it’s about taking a concept and finding ways to make it modern and something every woman wants to wear.
If you had to pick, what’s your favorite piece and why?
I’m loving novelty leather for this season – the Avery perforated biker jacket and Bradford perforated leather skirt are just some of my favorite pieces that effortlessly transition from one season to the next.
What part of the design process do you enjoy most?
I’ve always believed that fashion is more than just making someone look beautiful, it’s meant to reassure women and give them confidence. So for me, seeing women wear my collection is the most gratifying part.
What was the impetus for your latest book, Living in Style: Inspiration and Advice for Everyday Glamour?
I really wanted to share with everyone how to incorporate glamour into their lives, whether through personal style and home décor or entertaining and travel. I compiled tips and offer advice from my personal experiences as well as those from some of my expert friends.
