2013 Finalists for the CFDA/Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge Britt Cosgrove and Marina Polo of SVILU tell us about what inspires them and how their line of sustainable Womenswear came to be.

Speak to what inspires you – what motivated you to start SVILU?

SVILU was conceived out of a desire to offer women a wardrobe of staples made in a mindful way.

We find inspiration in the intersection between creativity, commerce and the environment.  Discovering the latest sustainable fabrics excites us and informs our design decisions.

How has your line evolved and where do you see it going?

At SVILU we are always thinking about the next step – we’re growing our selection of organic cotton basics and working with mills to develop sustainable custom prints.  We want SVILU to be the first place people come for design with a conscience.

What did the CFDA/Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge do to help grow your brand?

Thanks to the Eco-Fashion Challenge more people know about SVILU – the exposure has been tremendous.  Through the CFDA & Lexus we’ve been introduced to advocates for sustainable design and are constantly encouraged by the growing interest in mindful fashion. The award brings greater awareness and legitimacy to our field and challenges the preconceived ideas of “green fashion”.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2014 CFDA Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge.  Learn more about the program and apply before July 23rd 2014, here.
