2012 Nominee for:
SWAROVSKI AWARD FOR MENSWEAR
In Dutch, Snyder means “one who makes outer garments” so it was natural for Iowa-born Todd Snyder to leave his hometown of Ames in 1989 to work as a tailor’s assistant in Des Moines. By later wearing his own designs as an intern at Ralph Lauren, Snyder got promoted to sketching shirts and ties for the label. From there he went on to design men’s sportswear at J.Crew and the Gap, outerwear for Polo Ralph Lauren, and returned to the Gap in 2000 as Director of Menswear. Four years later Snyder became SVP of menswear at J. Crew where he revamped men’s styling across the board, introduced formalwear, and launched a series of heritage brand collaborations that culminated in the popular Liquor Store boutique, opened in 2008. Snyder left J.Crew shortly thereafter launching his own collection of casual American classics in 2011. Inspired by extensive research on military tailoring, Jermyn Street, and classic Hollywood style, the collection features everything from selvedge chinos to stonewashed Loro Piana sweaters and three-piece British wool suits. Now in his third season, Snyder has expanded his portfolio to include elegantly unstructured one-button tuxedos and countless innovative iterations of vintage cargos, trenches and military knits. Melding New York urbanity and Iowa rusticity in every garment, Snyder always tries to live up to the maxim of his idol, Hardy Amies, who once said, “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.”
A Moment with Todd:
When you found out you were nominated you…I kept wanting to hug someone but thought it was too awkward so I took everyone for champagne at Pastis instead.
My first job in fashion was…Working as a tailor assistant in a men’s suiting store in Iowa called Badowers. I did everything from sweeping the floor to sewing hems and tailoring jackets.
Being nominated for a CFDA Fashion Award is…A dream come true. And cathartic after almost 20 years in the business.
One of the few times I have been star struck was when I met…Brad Pitt while working at Ralph Lauren. I was sitting at the table in a workroom eating lunch. Ralph walked in with Brad and he introduced himself… I really almost choked. I couldn’t say hi back.
One of my biggest sources of inspiration is…Vintage clothing. I have a huge collection of leather jackets and military outerwear. I love going to the vintage markets in London… Portobello is my favorite. You can find everything from vintage jeans to a great painting.
First thing I do when I get to the office is…Turn on the music. I can’t work with out it.
One of the best things about my job is…It’s different everyday and it’s never predictable.
