All of our member designers have unique journeys and new CFDA Member Kerry O’Brien is no exception. Owner and designer of the Commando brand of intimate apparel and hosiery, she was a Vice President at 25 years old for Edelman Financial with a background in media relations surrounding mergers and acquisitions. She would later work in media and politics at CNN and ABC News: Nightline before launching the fashionable yet extremely functional Commando brand. We talk to Kerry about where she finds inspiration.
What did you require/ desire when designing your studio space? How did you want it to look and feel, and why?
My studio is in Vermont where I’m surrounded by incredible natural beauty. I can look out the window and see the Green Mountains and working farms. We have a very open industrial space with concrete floors and steel stairways in a very pastoral setting. I love that juxtaposition.
Where do you find inspiration?
Inspiration sneaks up on me. It’s important to me to be unrushed and unscheduled while exploring new places. It can be an entirely new city or just an undiscovered block in a very familiar place like New York. One place that never fails to inspire and delight me is the Marche aux Puces in Paris, particularly the Marches Paul Bert and Serpette. The colors and textures are incredible. Finding a one-of-a-kind treasure like the vintage Christian Lacroix necklace I picked up on my last trip is the best.
What is your favorite word?
I actually keep a list of favorite words. So much of commando’s brand DNA is about a bit of irreverent humor, so I refer to it often. Foxy, wondrous, ravishing and discombobulated are a few on the list.
What is your favorite sound?
I love the sound of a wood burning fire. I have one every night I’m home from October to March.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I would love to be a singer. Unfortunately, I can’t sing – really, really can’t sing. When I was Christmas caroling as a child, I was asked to lip sync…by my father. I sing to my four-year old twins and they told me I have a beautiful voice. I nearly cried.
Kerry has been a supporter of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and for the month of October will donate $5 of every product sold on www.wearcommando.com to the initiative. We thank her for her support to this important cause.
